Salute to A War Hero

Hall of Fame Leh, India

Hall of Fame Leh, India

I am staring at a blank page
Again
Just an aching emptiness
Returns to mind
And
I am thinking of your letters
Overflowing with words
A spidery crawl
That must have earned pedantic reprimands
Each available corner filled
With emotions and thoughts
For your father, mother, little sister
Intriguing you loved
But never confessed
You are a stranger
I looked on your letter once in a remote museum
Yet I have carried each word
In my mind subconsciously
So much of your essence
Is captured in your epistle
Your warmth, your humor, your unwritten fears
You were worried that your time on earth was running out
If courage is acting in presence of fear
You were courageous
Abundantly so
Maybe you never imagined
Every frail vulnerability
Would meet unknown eyes
And touch hidden chords
I think of a mother
Waiting for her son to call
He is alive
But he has no time
I think of a wife staring across the table
Her husband is absorbed with yet another phone call
People alive but empty for words
Someone to listen, to attend, to validate them
It is an endless waiting
You ran pace with the same world
Yet outpaced us all
With one letter
